Paul Stuart: People of Europa
Paul Stuart: People of Europa
People of Europa is an archival pigment ink print based on Paul Stuart's 2007 mixed media digital piece of the same name. From a piece the artist made as a student exploring the idea of potential extraterrestrial life existing within our own solar system; inside Jupiter's moon 'Europa'.
Europa, also known as Jupiter II, is the smallest of the four Galilean moons orbiting Jupiter and the sixth-closest of all the known moons of Jupiter. Despite its relatively small size, Europa is of great scientific interest due to its smooth, icy surface and the strong possibility of a subsurface ocean beneath the ice. This ocean, thought to be kept in a liquid state by tidal heating from Jupiter's gravitational forces, makes Europa a prime candidate for the search for extraterrestrial life. The moon's surface, marked by a network of cracks and streaks, indicates active geological processes. NASA's upcoming Europa Clipper mission aims to explore these intriguing features and assess the moon's potential for habitability.
